NIKE, Inc.
In 1971, Nike changed its name from Blue Ribbon Sports to its present one. The name was inspired by the Greek Goddess of Victory. The iconic Swoosh Logo was also created in 1971. A graphic design student created the world-famous logo for just 35$. The logo was inspired by the Greek goddess Nike. Nike Swoosh the Nike Cleat and the Nike Waffle Racer were the first shoes to feature this logo at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
In 1984 The Inaugral Nike factory was opened in Portland, Oregon. This led to the first Niketown creation in 1990, which was also located in Portland. Niketown became famous due to its storytelling ability of the brand. In 1996, Nike launched its official website. The site focused on storytelling in the starting. It gave site visitors the chance to learn more about Nike’s large list of athletes. Storytelling has always been an important part of Nike’s brand. The storytelling has become more mythical and epic as time passes on for Nike.
The Nike website got better in 1998 when NikeiD launched. The ability for the consumer to customize their own Nikes was tremendous at that time. In 1999, the site fully transitioned from an editorial hub to an e-commerce platform.
About Phil Knight
Phil Knight is the co-founder of Nike along with Bill Bowerman. Knight, was the President of Nike from 1968 to 1990. He again became President in 2000 and stayed in that position till 2004. Before getting associated with Nike, Knight was an accountant and a Professor of Business Administration.
About Bill Bowerman
Bill Bowerman is one of the most renowned track coaches of all time. Bowerman was also the coach of Phil Knight when he was a runner at the University of Oregon. Bowerman continued his coaching duties for 24 years straight. He was the one to develop some of the greatest runners, like Steve Prefontaine.
The Knight & Bowerman Team
Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight wanted to develop a footwear that could mainly address athletes. In the early 1970s, Bowerman developed the waffle outsole. The waffle outsole was an experimental product by Bowerman in which he poured rubber compound into his wife’s waffle iron. The duo wanted to offer athletic shoes with more grip over the ground and could weigh much lighter. The waffle soles and the great marketing of Nike were the reason to establish Nike as a leading athletic footwear brand.
